Hey There.

My name is Taylor Chenery and I started Pop Top Consulting to help beer distributors get online. The migration online can be scary and new and different, but it can be pretty amazing when done right. I have been in the industry for over 12 years and have been joking with a few colleagues recently that we need to 'make the beer business fun again.' I believe this is my little way of doing just that.

The Pop Top Story

I like to build stuff and fix things. I grew up with Legos. My kids love it when I build tents out of sheets, paracord, clothespins, and Swiffer mops. I got into the beer business from a curiosity of homebrewing. I spent more energy on the labels than the making of the beer itself, but that was the most fun part for me. That hobby that led to an epiphany: there was a whole industry about beer! I set my sights on joining this club but it took some work. I remember reaching out to Sam Calgione from Dogfish Head asking how I could get into this elite group of beer professionals. Pro Tip: Don't mention your email address in a documentary if you don't want people to contact you. He responded to me to read up on beer books and volunteer at breweries. So I did.

Then, a job was posted at a local craft beer distributor for a routed sales rep. I applied but never heard back. I tracked down the corporate HR fella whose info was available on the job postings and kept calling until I got him on the phone. I remember saying "Jason, I feel like I'm qualified, what do I need to do to at least get a look?" And his response was "Well this is a good start, you definitely have initiative. Let me look at your resume... Your resume doesn't stand out at all, you need to show a passion for the product." The next posting for merchandiser came up and I called back to let him know I was applying that day and he promised I would at least get a call.

We were then off to the races! Merchandising, route sales, on premise, special events, business development, route coverage, area sales manager, supplier sales rep, regional territory manager, brand development manager, and most recently director of brand development.

​

A few years back I was on a brewery orientation trip and the topic of 'the e-shelf' came up and my boss asked my opinion. I remember getting very excited. "You can do anything with an account number and an item number!" I told him. I then proceeded to nerd-out on the possibilities of targeted sales opportunities, direct marketing options, and rudimentary AI selling. I was asked to build a wish-list of what I would want out of a platform and when we got back I was leading the development of our Retailer Portal site with VIP. Fast forward three years and we were winning awards and stretching the capabilities of the site in ways that were unimaginable at the start.

That brings us to now. I saw an opportunity to take my unique experience on the road and offer it to wholesalers and suppliers who want to not just participate in the online space, but really grow something. Pop Top Consulting was created to do just that. We know what it takes to not just get online, but to leverage the digital opportunity to fuel your company's growth.
